Did you know the way you dress can impact the way you feel? A new study suggests that many woman have experienced dressing in nicer clothes makes you feel better. As stated in a recent news release, one study has shown that women who are depressed or sad are more likely to wear baggy clothing.
Below is a list of the main fashion choices for women over the decades starting as early as the 1950’s.
- 1950’s- Women we’re often seen in public wearing poodle skirts, bobby sox, saddle shoes, and ponytails. You also might see women wearing sweater sets or blouses and skirts, but for most social events they would be wearing dresses.
- 1960’s- Women often wore stiletto heel shoes and suits with short boxy jackets, and oversized buttons. For in the evening women wore dresses that that had low necklines and close-fitting waists.
- 1970’s- Women were known for for wearing bell bottom pants, frayed jeans, midi skirts, maxi dresses, tie-dye, peasant blouses, and ponchos. For accessories they wore chokers, headbands, scarves, stones, feathers, and beads.
- 1980’s- Women wore high waisted trousers, printed blouses, bright head and wrist sweatbands, ankle boots, and polka dotted dresses. In the 80’s you would see a lot of bright clothing being worn.
- 1990’s- You would see women wearing slip dresses, bomber jackets, scrunchies, and plaid flannel shirts. You would also see sports wear being worn.
- 2000’s- Popular outfits for women were often mesh or handkerchief tops, box- pleated or leather skirts, shiny pants, and sparkly shoes. In the 2000’s tops were shorter, and the waist of pants were ridiculously lower sometimes even showing underwear.
- 2010’s- Women wore shawl collars, cardigans, and cable knit sweaters these were popular choices that would later go with flannel skirts and skinny jeans forming the hipster look.
- 2020’s- As of now the current trends in fashion are hoodies under blazers, oversized bomber jackets, puff sleeves, sweats, and leggings. Today the modern fashion style is bold looks, statement pieces, and loud bright colors.
As you can see above fashion is constantly evolving. Change is often perceived as a good thing, but sometimes that’s not always the case. Women in the 1950’s would always dress up before going out into the public to show their individual identity. Now you look at todays fashion trends and see they are very different. Women today don’t dress up as much anymore, instead of wearing nice clothing to run errands you often see women in public wearing sweats, athletic clothing, or even sometimes pajamas. I’m not saying that you should put on a nice big puffy dress like they did in the 1950’s to go run errands, I’m saying that there is a thing called being too casual.
America a long time ago was known for its fashion, of course that was when women were wearing ball gowns and men were dressing up in suits. Now today Americas fashion isn’t talked about as much. American fashion today is known for being eclectic and predominantly informal. People today have taken that informal fashion trend quite to literally. Today if you were to walk into your local Walmart and see people in pajamas you might not think a thing about it, but if you were to do that in the 1950’s or even 1970’s people would probably think you were crazy.
Like I said before the types of clothing you wear can impact the way you feel. According to alexandrawoodbespoke.co.uk wearing baggy clothing will bring down your energy level and make you want to hide in bed. One of the reasons of schools making students where uniforms is to help them excel in school. There have been many studies over the past couple of years providing proof that when wearing baggy or comfortable clothing your test scores tend to be lower than when you are a little more dresses up. Now it is nice to be comfortable, but there are many ways to be comfortable without looking trashy or homeless.
The idea of wearing comfortable clothing is you can just roll out of bed and throw it on, instead of taking the extra time to get up and fully get ready in the mornings. People have found baggy clothing as a solution for hiding their bodies. Baggy clothing might make you feel better about yourself but in the long run it’s not helping you at all. The new comfort style might be looked at as cute but in reality it’s just a sign of laziness. If you can’t get yourself out of bed in the mornings and put on a presentable outfit then there might be something wrong.
In todays time there is no excuse for dressing poorly. Everyday people are coming out with new clothing or launching brands, so there is no excuse for not being able to find something. I am aware how expensive clothing items can be now, but if you go into Walmart or even a thrift store I bet you can find something to wear out in public. Dressing up doesn’t always have to mean finding a nice dress, it could mean throwing on a cute skirt with a simple top. After reading this I hope I have encouraged you to go in your closet find something to wear and be confident in it.
